While we will study the role of building and fire codes in subsequent chapters of this text, it is important to understand that many—if not most—buildings are not totally compliant with all building (and fire) codes.

学习建筑知识和消防规范是一回事，理解这个世界上还有很多（不是绝大多数）建筑物并不完全符合规范又是另一回事了。

On the one hand, people make honest mistakes, which can lead to noncompliance. On the other hand, some building designers and contractors take shortcuts, thereby creating dangers for fire fighters.

It is important for you to be alert to such conditions, and preplanning can reveal them before an emergency occurs.

Study Fire Reports

Over the last several years, there has been a significant increase in the number of “after-action” reports, particularly when fire fighters are killed.

近几年，关于火灾事故的调查报告数量显著增加，特别是有消防员殉职的火灾。

Most notable among these are the fire fighter fatality reports issued by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

最值得一读的当属国家职业安全与健康研究所发布的消防员殉职报告。

In addition, some states and cities have issued their own after-action reports.

很多州和城市也发布了他们撰写的调查报告。

Most of these studies include important information about the building construction and its behavior in the fire.

多数报告都包含建筑物的相关信息和在火灾中的建筑结构对火势发展的影响等重要内容。

These reports provide critical information on fire fighter safety, albeit obtained at a steep price—the supreme sacrifice. Take the time to read them and learn from them.

In addition to these after-action reports, websites have been developed to collect and disseminate information about fireground “near-misses.”

It is important to periodically visit these sites and review the reports there to learn about the experiences of fire fighters who were nearly injured or killed, including information about the role of building construction in the incident.
